More beggars picked up due to increased awareness, surveillance
Posted: 19 July 2010 2349 hrsSINGAPORE : More beggars are being picked up on the streets of Singapore, largely because of increased public awareness and stepped-up surveillance, said Community Development Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.
He said the number is 60 so far this year, and close to half of them are foreigners.
The average number of beggars picked up each year, over the past three years, has been 85.
Dr Balakrishnan noted that Singaporeans who need help do not have to beg.
They can turn to various sources of aid including Community Development Councils, Family Service Centres and voluntary welfare groups.
The minister was giving a written answer to Nominated MP Laurence Wee. - CNA /ls -

It's true though. Most needy Singaporeans are aided by the government. In other word, the foreigner are left unaided in despair. In Singapore, it's hard to find employment, especially for foreigners. Hence, unemployment is one of the cause of increasing numbers of beggars.

I tot in Singapore very hard to get financial aid from Government. Easier to get from private charity organisation?
