HINDU temples are an as yet largely untapped source of social service, Minister for Law and Home Affairs K. Shanmugam said on Saturday.
He noted that Hindu missions such as the Ramakrishna Mission and the Sree Narayana Mission are actively providing a wide range of social services.
But Hindu temples have largely focused on catering to religious needs until more recently, he said.
Mr Shanmugam was speaking at the opening of the Hindu Centre Singapore's conference on Hinduism and Social Service: Strategies and Synergies, held at the MDIS Campus in Queenstown.
The Hindu community can afford to step up its provision of social services, and engaging more temples is key, he said.
The two-day event explores the relationship between Hinduism and service, and how the community can more actively provide social services to the needy.
More taiji from the govt.
