Looks like everybody has to go to their boss to ask for reduced salaries now.
Cheaper, better, faster.

Cosmopolitan Cities I hear before, but Cosmopolitan Country?
How can a country be cosmopolitan? It makes no sense.
And Singapore is becoming like a corporate, a company, a rich man's club, don't you think?

I wouldn't be too worried about that...for now...
That I have to correct you, the engineering, design, IT and financial services jobs are taken by your foreign friends,
When will you be replaced, Singaporean?

If you are a youngster or a fresh grad, no matter what you study, you don't stand a chance against cheaper foreigners who will be imported en masse to replace you.
Study business related, sorry, too common, will be replaced by your Pinoy friends, they speak english better than you.
Study engineering, sorry, too expensive, will be replaced by your PRC friends, they can write chinese better than you, more useful for the manufacturing plants in China
Study IT, sorry, too expensive, will be replaced by your indian friends.
Study Mass Comms, Journalism, Film-making, Arts..sorry, you will be replaced by your Indonesian, Pinoy, Malaysian friends, who can speak more regional languages than you, and they are cheaper. PRC girls who are prettier (look at our channel 8/U news broadcasters!) Pinoy guys more handsome and Ang Mohs, speak better English than you!
Study Chemicals, Oil & Gas, sorry, Myanmese and Banglah friends cheaper than you.
Study Finance, sorry, Pinoys and middle-eastern friends cheaper than you.
Now, what, my young friend, can you study? Can you support yourself and your love ones if no matter what you study, you will be replaced due our the pro-foreigner polices in placed by the Govt, which your parents have voted for?
Whats you future like? Havent's think about it? Don't care?
then don't study lah ! ....
just roll over and die .....
I tell you now .... with an attitude like that, you will DEFINITELY be replaced ... even without foreign talents.
Show yr potential boss that you are better than foreign colleagues.
Dont let foreign staff look down on you.
Work harder!

Nah, you have to study. But "study" smart.
Why take 4 years to get a degree, when our foreign friends can get one within two?
Why bother to "study" for a degree when you can buy one?
Why keep thinking gettting a dip/deg/Mast/Cert is the only way to get a job, an income?
You want to study a degree that specialise in BioTech, let's say. Takes you 4 years. Your foreign friends already have that in 2 years and are easily absorbed by BioTech companies. When you get your degree, sorry, jobs taken 2 years ago.
So what leaves you, Singaporean?
My question:
1) Diploma or Degree? (which one is marketable due to current economic situation?)
2) O or N level?
3) ITE?
With the current situation, I would urge my kid to go to Poly route and get the Dip and out looking for jobs. At the same time, take up night class (degree). What you guys think? Ok for this route?
Reason is spending over ten of thousands of dollars for degree will be hard to get back the amount when working (presently degree command not so high salary).

Ok, I don't mind reducing my salary for one dollar.
I have talked to my neighours, friends and taxi drivers...the answer I got is that after completing degree, the cost of the u fees around $30K...and will be hard to recoup back when go out to work as nowadays employers wont pay a degree holder high salary.
What you think?

Go oversea and get degree, after graduation, stay there and find work.

It's honestly really easy to put in words, go work, and study part time degree. Until you actually tried it.
As for the money spent on obtaining a degree, one should see it as a lifelong investment, and not base it on monetary returns.

If your salary is $1, you will be every Singapore employers' dream worker.

You got me wrong. Maybe my sentence is incorrect.
I actually mean, my salary, from it take away one dollar, not reduce to one dollar.

I did a few night course while working when I was in my late 20s...it really tiring and many sacrificed. Not easy.

completely agree...easy to say go for part-time study and all that, but to actually go through it, it's never easy.
Worst, once you grad with your cert/deg/mast, you found out that it didnt help much in increasing your salary, worst still, employers find you expensive, replace you.
So, when will you be replaced, Singaporean?

If you have been exposed to the work environment out there in S'pore, you will know I'm not paranoid, but merely stating the facts.
How about.. just roll over and die. Problem solved.
lol

If you're not too concerned about your own/family financial status, then it's perfectly ok to obtain a degree to gain extra knowledge, treat it as lifelong investment.
I'm not sure who doesn't expect monetary returns from their investment(time/money) in a degree.
