I READ about how the National Environment Agency is adopting a "light touch" in dealing with errant motorists who leave their engines running ("Motorists get a message: Don't leave the engine on"; Aug 28).
While I appreciate that not every wrongdoing needs to be harshly sanctioned, people must be shown firm action so that their behaviour can be corrected.
Living by a nature reserve offers one the gift of fresh air. But every day, trucks and cabs park by the side of the road, emitting carbon dioxide and creating noise pollution as they leave their engines on. As they relax in air-conditioned comfort, the environment suffers. The compassionate approach of NEA is commendable, but if the situation continues, then the agency needs to urgently step up its efforts.
The NEA has to decide if the long-term pollution of the environment by errant motorists who choose their comfort over the country's general well-being is against the law. If so, make it official; put up signs, make compliance part of obtaining a driving licence, and do frequent patrols in areas where such behaviour is common. If the problem persists, take these people to task.
