STAND at any traffic junction with a pedestrian crossing these days and one will notice that impatient motorists can't wait for pedestrians to finish crossing the road even when the green man is lit up.
Often they squeeze their way through after the first wave of pedestrians have barely passed.
Others wait but rev their engines as if to intimidate pedestrians to move faster so they can speed off.
I strongly urge all motorists to give way instead of squeezing through. The law stipulates that once a pedestrian has stepped onto the crossing, all motorists have to stop.
I strongly urge the Land Transport Authority and Traffic Police to step up vigilance, especially at busy junctions.

i wait for pedestrians because it is their right of way and also for safety.. waiting another 5 seconds for them to cross is nothing, really..
however, near my current office, the pedestrians think they own the road.. it's green for cars, they continue to walk without looking out.. and not a few times i have to slam on the brakes because of someone just walking out when the red man is on, without looking, i get an icy glare by the pedestrians as if it was my fault for not giving way to them during the red man...
it's a miracle that no one has gotten killed yet.. but there have been at least one pedestrian who was knocked down
to make things worse, motorcycles also use the pedestrian crossing for a short-cut..
hectic lifestyle has breed inpatience both pedestrians and motorists.
Nowadays car turn never give the signal one.
Crazy car drivers dowan on signals when they turned.
Introduce a law whereby motorists need to wait for the red man to on then they can make a turn. This means even if there's no pedestrians crossing the road while the green man signal is on, motorists are not allowed to make the turn.
at least i can see these pedestrians crossing but not those cyclists just dash thru
almost got one the other day - wonder whose fault will it be if i were to hit him?
When I'm pedestrian, I will show hand signal and let the car go first. I rather let that metal piece cut my lane, then me being pinned underneath it. But when I'm driving, I cannot stand it that pedestrian at the traffic light or pedestrian crossing take their own sweet time to cross. Some kids even can play over there, cannot wait cross first then play meh
I think it works both ways.
why so geh gao....chin chye la. Just run a bit when the light is flashing la. They don't own the roads.
Motorists & vehicles are still ok. But for bicycles, there are a higher chance of them going thru the crowd of pedestrian crossing the road.
Normally I wait for the car to stop before crossing even if it is green light.
Cos some motorists just dont care a damn.
i dun wait for brownie, i just horn them, they thought they own the road. their kiao tuo father buy want ah.

If its not old folks or young kid. You shall blast the horn on them when they cross the road after green man....

Blast them also no use, wait they throw shoes on the driver.
I AGREE with Mr Tay Chin Chye ("Motorists can't wait for pedestrians to cross"; Aug 31) that motorists in Singapore are getting more impatient with other road users.
Recently, at a T-junction in Toa Payoh, a vehicle refused to stop at the right turn just as a string of pedestrians were crossing when the green man was lit. The people who were crossing dashed for cover except me, and the car came to a stop just inches away from my knees.
Despite being in the wrong, an angry young driver stuck out his head and shouted at me for "obstructing the traffic".
Such dangerous driving has become a common feature here. I believe that attempting to educate our drivers about respecting pedestrians on the road cannot produce positive results in the near future.
This kind of driving attitude calls for an immediate tightening of enforcement action by the authorities.

I REFER to Mr Tay Chin Chye's letter yesterday ("Motorists can't wait for pedestrians to cross").
The writer raised a valid point, and I concur with his view. However, from my observation both as a driver and pedestrian, I sympathise with the motorists.
Often, you see pedestrians strolling across the road, sometimes talking on their mobile phone. The traffic light may be in their favour, but pedestrians should spare a thought for motorists and cross quickly.
I strongly urge pedestrians to play their part as well, and contribute to the safety of both parties.
