A 51-YEAR-OLD driver of a car involved in a hit-and-run accident which killed a teenage motorcyclist on Thursday was arrested within the day.
When the police called the man, who is not the owner of the car, he said that he was wandering around and had not returned home.
He was then advised by the police officer to surrender himself. He turned up at the Traffic Police headquarters at about noon on Thursday.
The man, who was driving a grey Mercedes Benz E200, had fled the scene of the accident after hitting the motorcycle ridden by Mr Jackson Ng, 19, with a woman pillion rider, at the junction of Hougang Avenue 2 and Upper Serangoon Road at about 1.34am.
Mr Ng was found lying unconscious on the ground by officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force when they arrived at the scene.
He was rushed to the Changi General Hospital where he died at about 5pm on Thursday after sustaining multiple fractures. His pillion rider, 23, was also warded for leg injuries.
The man was arrested for causing death by a rash act, and also for failing to provide assistance.
If convicted of these two charges, he may be fined up to $8,000 or jailed up to 3 years.
so if the driver decides not to surrender himself the police cant catch anyone huh?
That junction is notorious for traffic accidents. My dad's car was totaled at the same spot early last year as well.
the fellow must be drink-driving....
that's why, he ran after the accident...
COWARD !!!!!

of course can arrest him...
but for him to surrender... then that is much better right ? ( save on labour cost to arrest him ).. lol.

u're saying the police are lazy to go and catch him? or hit and run is a big offence, but if hit and run liao but come back can cancel away the run part?
As long as you leave the initial place of accident is considered hit and run...
Upon accident taken placed, the drivers must come down their said vehicles to inspect and check to see if there are any injury involved.
As long as there are injury, damage to public property (eg lamp post, central dividers), or accidents involving foreign vehicles, traffic police must be present.
once the vehicles are shifted w/o TP's approval on the mentioned above cases, TP can charge you for an offence.
The said coward must be drink-driving... that's why he sped off instead of checking on the 3rd party...

TP can track him down slowly... though Singapore is small... but if somebody wanted to avoid being arrested... it can take a while.. (eg. Mas Selamat).. lol.
