HDB buys $2.3m solar panels as part of sustainable housing initiatives
Posted: 12 July 2010 1452 hrsSINGAPORE: 3,000 residential units will have solar panels installed in their precincts by year end.
The precincts include Jurong, Aljunied, Telok Blangah, Bishan, Ang Mo Kio and Jalan Besar.
This initiative comes under phase two of HDB's solar capability building programme.
Under it, the HDB made its single largest purchase of solar panels to date by buying them from Renewable Energy Corporation at about $2.3 million.
The decision follows a drop in the price of solar technology.
Since 2008, the price of Solar PV modules has dropped by up to 55 per cent, from $5.17/Watts-peak down to $2.33/Wp.
Working with American consultancy Camp, Dresser & McKee, HDB will also embark on a study in Punggol.
The study aims to develop a set of Key Performance Indicators in the areas of water, energy and waste reduction.
An Urban Systems Model, which supports planning decisions by simulating performance against sustainability objectives will also be developed.
The results are intended to help HDB's overall planning process.
Tay Kim Poh, CEO, HDB, says: "When we are able to put in place the renewable energy in the form of solar panels it will help to reduce energy consumption within the HDB estates.
The solar energy will help to offset the energy consumption in the common areas - and that will save money for the town councils which will eventually translate into savings for the residents as well."

solar power is only good if the sun is strong like oz alas spore has sunlight somehwat dim ln overcast like 50% of time so.......ya be lucky to have the sun bright n sunny n solar panles catching them from 11am-3pm.simply not justifiable as u need more than 5hrs of sunlight per day.....plus the batteries to be replaced after a few years.....FAIL!!!
MP SHOULD MOUNT SOLAR PANELS ON HOT AIR BALLON TETHERED AND SEND IT ABOVE THE CLOUDS N IN FULL EXPOSURE OF SUNLIGHT!

u know,,,,,magnifying glaass to geberate more electricity is ok......just like when i was a kid using magnifying glass to make a hole in paper.......then in that case we could reseach n develope the kids papercups n string technology....free telephone calls!!!!!

i think the trade off is that cost had come down rather than efficent used of solar panel.....

makes a call to mah bow tan using new technology of coffecups n strings....talks to him free of charge and tells him to put a horse on a conveyor belt and make it run fer a couplea hours to recharge power supplies meant for his lil solar power project.need only to feed it with dried grass and an apple everyday..

Any cost savings will prolly go towards increasing the pay of our ministers liao..........

hmmmm....arap....well...someone needs to pay fer the initial startup.....those power cells need to store up power somewhere....and it cant be used for the ac current unless u convert it back using another power supply system.and since they are from dc they might as well stay with dc.in which case everyone should have a solar power gizmo....hmmmm...i have a drawing n some plans of generatin elcrtricity using waste paper n stuff thats combustible....think it could lite up house ..recharge cell phones etc.....but using them on ac is another different case...and complicated not to mention hard to get parts...hmmmm...i wonder if they sell em those parts from internet nowadays as i had problems gettin em in spore..none.
perhaps when ive done my projects wil;l i go see if its performance of my electrical generator using waste paper is viable.

these guys are talking about consumption in common areas...so i figure panel must be charged the power storage unit during the day so that by night the lights are being power locally for 12 hours.
I know in North America landscape has light that are charged by day and by night it lights up. Its just that the season daylight get shorter during winter.

i suspect the cost will be bared by newer flat owner....anyway we know that someway they will farm the cost back to buyers.....whats new.
it all depend on who gets it......
