AS PART of National Day celebrations, the 10 residents' committees (RC) in Sembawang encouraged residents to display the national flag on July 4 at precisely 10.34am, so that the number of flags displayed could be entered into the Singapore Book Of Records.
This exercise seems at odds with the spirit of celebration on such an occasion, where spontaneity is the quintessential element. Turning it into a record-setting activity does not seem quite right.
What is so important about setting a record of this sort? Would residents care that they have made it into the record book? Would future years see RCs scrambling to break this record? Does the exercise mean anything at all?
It would seem that the RCs have forgotten that displaying the flag is just one of the many ways to celebrate National Day. It is not the most important way, and if some residents choose not to display the flag, so be it.
I would rather see residents proudly displaying the national flag as a gesture of patriotism than for the sake of setting a record in some obscure book.
The RCs deserve full credit for improving the environment of our precinct and promoting cohesion among residents. However, their well-meaning effort in this instance is off the mark.

It will be a common sight for the leaders and croonies to engage in useless and meaningless self-glorification and money wasting exercise to pit against each other in order to shine in front of the old man.
They must have given too much loose money to engage in such petty competition exercise instead of working together to serve the community better by preventing more floods, litter and rat problems.
That is the state of things here.
Everyone trying to score bonus point though wayanging and showmanship.
Breaking meaningless record of number of flags flown and number of people doing taiji are just another way of wasting important money paid by the tax payers.
I wonder how many people will fly the China national flag at our HDB flats on 1 October. LOL...
i tink FT and PR families will be displaying the flag only......
and not forgetting about die-hard fans of PXP
Complaining about something. That's going overboard.
why Jul 4?

tell you already our govt folks don;t lived in Singapore remember .........they lived in landlock country.
Times are bad.
Money cannot buy patriotism.
But it can surely buy a lot of flags.

money flag.
Actually, why July 4 2010 at exactly 10.34 am?
Fengshui master told them to choose that exact date and time is it?
I heard there is an ongoing exercise in which RCs are starting to distribute flags free of charge to residents in certain areas to hang the flags up.
If you observe the flags being put up by residents, they are all new and similar in folding creases, meaning they all came from the same source.
Last time, you had to buy, now it's FOC.

Go check with your nearest RC.

They want the record.
