I REFER to Tuesday's report, 'Use this Indian scarf to fend off 'eve teasers''.
The first step in solving a problem is by acknowledging what it is. By calling something as offensive and outrageous as harassment 'teasing' makes light of a serious situation that could easily escalate into something even more egregious.
If a person makes provocative remarks, it is not teasing, it is harassment. If a group of men follows a woman down a street and jeers at her, it is not teasing, it is harassment. And if a person is groped on a crowded bus, it is not teasing; it is not only harassment, it is assault as well.
In protecting the dignity of women, 'eve teasing' should be called what it really is: harassment.
