THE number of beggars rounded up rose sharply last year.
In 2009, 109 beggars were picked up by officers from the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS). Of these, 62 were locals and 47 were foreigners.
Between 2006 and 2008, an average of 77 beggars were caught each year.
An MCYS spokesman said its officers conduct regular patrols in different locations, in response to the feedback it receives through its call line.
Among the problem spots with frequent complaints is Geylang Serai market. The problem there was flagged recently in local Malay newspaper Berita Harian, with patrons complaining of beggars harassing them during meals.
As many as six beggars might be present at the market, stall owners told The Sunday Times.

The ratio of locals to foreigners is just about right.
56% locals, 44% foreigners.

The ratio is correct.
42% of the population in Singapore are foreigners and foreigners make up 50% of the service sector.[14] [15]
The country is also the second most densely populated in the world after Monaco.[16]A.T.
Kearney names Singapore as the most globalised country in the world in its Globalization Index.[17][18]

But it will increase in next 5 years to maybe 40% locals, 60 % aliens.

just report them to police if they create nuisance and irritates you.

haha lol.
The problem with most of these beggars is that they take advantage of people's compassion. Most of them see begging as an easy way out.
Local or foreign, they should be given harsh punishment. We must stop the problem ASAP, or the problem will get worse and we'll end up like India.

"harsh punishment", care to enlighten how?
they don't have money, already.. If we send them to jail, we have pay for their lodgings/food.. or we just fax them to Ubin for hard labour?
and these beggars put on monk and nun robes to beg. Fuck! Give them one kick in the teeth....well just my own imagination lol.

just send them back immediate if they on visiting pass, also banned them entry again to our country. don;t worry about shortage of labor, countries like them keep producing babies every day every year so we alwasy have fresh supply of foreign labor when and where we want. they will just keep coming over no matter how tough we make the conditions LOL. sg ever got any legal law stating that they can come here work on visitor's pass? if so i think MOM seriously need to review issue of such passess. and we should think twice next election when we vote.
Foreign trash vs SG genuises.Close call!
