It is fair to say that people since 1959, only voted PAP primarily based on fear and not on popularity?
Some older folks may know more about this issue.
cos there are no alternative parties except PAP. PAP is the only party that has the experiences being in government. their track record in the past said it all.
our opposition are weak here. there was a party that can rival the PAP one initially, but they were all arrested under ISD.
PAP uses fear to frighten the voters that if they voted for the opposition parties, singapore will collapse in no time. spore reserves will be depleted. the opposition will undo the good work they have done for the past 40 years in an instant.

That's right.
PAP crippled all the other parties, so people were left without a choice but to go along with PAP.
There was also a fear of voting for opposition.
It seems to me, that PAP rule after 1959 were based on these factors and NEVER on popularity.
There is no way on earth that Lee Kuan Yew can win votes base on popularity.
most won't admit it
Actually this question was what started me to question PAP and Lee Kuan Yew.
I was wondering how on earth can this Lee Kuan Yew who speaks a language that majority of people in Singapore don't understand can win elections?
It all began with this simple question.
Why?
I see other countries, their leaders and people speak the same language.
But when it comes to Singapore, this is completely not so.
Another thing that troubled me was why dialect was suppressed.
These are the basic questions that led me to question PAP and Lee Kuan Yew.
Later I found out that Lee Kuan Yew was a political fraud.
Fear was instilled as a form of control.

very correct and true, if not for the internet no one would be so ''willing'' to even criticize the PAP.
let's not forget the hundreds of thousands of people employed by the Govt like in stat boards, govt-linked companies and the uniform groups. you can count on the fact that almost all of them will vote for PAP to safeguard their ''ricebowls'' ! you can bet their families will also feel obliged to vote for PAP too.
now that these govt employees may not be enough to stem the PAP's declining popularity, they're resorting to ''importing'' foreigners as new citizens to keep them in power.

Many of these have no backbone. Because of such people we are all suffering.
Is their salary equal to the role they are doing?
They are getting high salary BECAUSE Singapore have no natural resources. That LARGE portion of money is supposed to be used to sustain Singapore NOT use them for some other personal uses. Goh Keng Swee is a minister that should be respected. BUT none of the current ministers are like him, they take everything for granted.
Look, if an average working person in singapore pays $2000 for income tax
There are about 2 million working Singaporeans, the other 900k are childrens.
2 mil x $2000 =$4 000 000 000 (4 billion)
Does running Singapore cost $4 bil/yr?
Isn't that $4 bil supposed to be used to subsidy the HDB flats costs?
Isn't that $4 bil supposed to be used to help needy people?
Isn't that $4 bil supposed to be used to train talents in Singapore?
Isn't that $4 bil supposed to be used to prevent a massive amount of foreigners in the country?
Isn't that $4 bil supposed to be used to save Singapore from a recession?
Isn't that $4 bil supposed to be used to cool down the property market?
Isn't that $4 bil supposed to be used to keep resales flats prices down?
Isn't that $4 bil supposed to be used to prevent a massive inflation?
Isn't that $4 bil supposed to be used to organise learning journeys for students?
What is that $4 billion they get a year from taxpayers used for? May I ask?
If your constituency isn't contested, whats there to vote for?
We vote because it is a law, I guess. I don't mind PAP, because they have experience. Come on, you can't help it but admit that MM Lee had contributed tremendous efforts to get Singapore to where it is now, although many will argue this point. Would David Marshall really have brought Singapore to prosperity, I don't think so. We really need people like MM Lee who could see ahead and plan well. The other political parties are never voted in because their ideas and plans just suck. Just read Workers' Party's newspapers, they are full of contradictory articles that agree and disagree with the current government and then end up concluding nothing. This is just epic fail. As long as policies made are generally for the good of the people, I am fine with the government.
I really believe the PAP will be in for a rude awakening in the coming elections. so many locals are unhappy over the influx of foreigners taking local jobs, not to mention the vice activities they bring to our shores like prostitution, illegal cigarette sellers and alchol etc etc. in the 90s where got such vice activities in Singapore.

thats why the opposition should build up war chests to context for every ward. they should pool a fund to invest and grow the money so that by the time the elections comes, they can afford to put out the deposits to contest.

Too much bickerings among the opposition parties.

thats why the locals dun trust these oppositions and voted for PAP.
when PAP uses fear and threat lar, if opposition were to form the government, spore reserves and the good work will be undone by these bickering parties.

so no change.
maybe those really unhappy with the PAP should do something, like contributing funds to the party, but then the track record of the opposition parties are really dismal. They must be wondering if their funds will get misused or worse misappropriated?
maybe the upcoming elections will tell us something, that the locals are really unhappy with the FT influx. I will be surprised if the opposition gets 1 or 2 seats in the parliament. I expected protest votes cast in the ballots.

A lot of spoilt votes to the benefits of the ruling party next round if the oppositions still have no decency to cooperate.
Then they will never be able to suceed in taking further than the current two seats.
i just vote any tom, dick or harry for the sake of voting pap out! :P
but then, do we have a choice if our place is walkover without contest?
i know some jerks in this forum will just spoilt their votes when given a chance, i will suggest them to jump off the mrt track instead! know how to mock government online but too humji to even vote against them.
they willing to scare, people willing to believe.
