LOW BIRTH RATEA nation of spoilt princesses?
THE Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware) seemed to suggest last Thursday ('Singapore still far behind in true gender equality: Aware') that women are free from blame for the declining birth rate in Singapore.
In Singapore, most parents urge their children to excel in studies and focus on their career. Few prepare their children for the rigours of parenthood.
Many households also employ maids. As a result, our boys and girls grow up lacking parenting skills and are clueless about household chores. The boys, however, have responsibilities forced upon them in the form of national service. Not so the girls. They are free to place personal ambition above all else.
Many women choose to remain single because they do not see the need or the urgency to get married. They do not need a man to provide for them and they can always depend on their girlfriends for emotional support. As for sex, few see the need to have it regularly.
Even when a woman does want to get married, her expectations get in the way. The man must be her 'type'. He must have a great job, good income, be reasonably good-looking and he must also charm her off her feet before she will contemplate marriage.
Our society glorifies the career woman. Lifestyle and fashion magazines devote pages to tips for the career woman to get ahead. Floors in shopping malls cater exclusively to the needs of these women and credit card and insurance companies vie for their money.
As a result, women are spoilt for choice. Egged on by society, free from national service and reservist obligations and not needing a man, they are totally free to focus exclusively on their careers. Choosing to get married and have children is committing career suicide.
The conclusion is inevitable. We have raised a nation of 'spoilt princesses' unwilling and unable to handle the rigours of motherhood.

I don't see what's the problem. Men are also free to pursue their interests and careers and get their sex from casual flings and professionals. NS is a bitch but that's about it.

Her version is just one side of the story. People these days are not spoilt....they are just modern. There are many many negative factors which discourage pple from having children in sg.

hong kong, taiwan, japan, korea and many other advanced nations face the same problem.

Thank you Sulthan Niaz for adding to the list of people who are quick to point fingers at others and jumping to conclusion, though fairly rationally. Well-written arguments that offers no solutions at the end of it. What a waste of forum space.
There are more than enough people out there (99.9%) who are quick to defend themselves, highlight others' mistakes and problems. What the society needs is for intelligent and emotionally stable people to propose constructive and practical solutions, and not add oil to fire.
It may be better to remain silent when you are arguing with a fool; passerbys won't be able to tell who is the fool when both enter an argument.

In defence of Aware and women
I REFER to Wednesday's letter, "A nation of spoilt princesses?", and here is my take.
Mr Sulthan pointed out that the Association of Women for Action and Research (Aware) has been unfair in its statement that women are "free from blame" concerning the low birth rate.
Organisations like Aware exist to remind us that inequality still exists and that we all need to improve ourselves, while allowing both genders to build good, wholesome families, leading to a better Singapore for us all.
They are a reminder that men must not take women for granted. In Singapore, this is all the more important as living and child-rearing costs keep going up. My own mother raised me and my two siblings while holding a job. In doing so, she has helped to raise the household income.
Mr Sulthan made a good point when he said national service does maketh a man, but I must add, however, that it is not the case for all men. As a full-time national serviceman, I have observed how a few do not grow up to be men but instead retreat further into their own world. So there is no guarantee if women were to go through NS that they would "grow up" to be better women.
Is society to blame for glorifying the career woman? I think it's more complicated than that. Placing the blame solely on society means the blame comes round back onto us. The issue of gender is multifaceted and pointing the finger at each other will not help. I wonder what social workers or experts have to say about this issue?

come on the ages where princess ride horsy and princes come to the rescue is over. so they have to fantasize on objects of attention and status like guceee and roti prota bags. even if time goes back to the past there can only be one princess and one prince in the story, the rest are maids and palce guards.

You mean working for their own keep makes them spoilt?
That author's brains are full of shit.
If the men cannot keep up with the women (who are better groomed, more educated, with higher EQs and salaries) then why should the women choose them? Why should women settle for men who are less able than they are?
In nature, the best male gets the female. Only less attractive females have to settle for 2nd rate males. And the reason is simple. To mate with someone with good genes. AND to pass on these superior genes to their offspring.
Men like this author obviously have lousy genes.

actually all these comes about when man gain intelligence. cavemen learn to make clothing to keep them warm. latter we evolve and become more intelligent we modify the warm clothing and mprove them on design and cutting making them fancier so that can attract people's attention. then come art. if we all become ignorant and stupid we will not have so many problem.

yes but unlike what you wrote, these lousy genes one will never give up mating and proloinginf their bloodline. as a result they produces even more losuy genes type or worse those richer lousy genes somehow able to mate with the prettier babes with guccee and roti pratat bags hanging over their heads and dilute the pretty genes. that s why you see ugly man mate with pretty babes if sone will resemble loust dad daughter will resemble pretty mom
