I WAS one of 13 people trapped in a lift at the Paragon shopping mall at around 11.50am last Saturday.
We were shocked to discover that the emergency bell did not work, and only after hitting the intercom button several times did a faint voice answer to say that a maintenance team would be sent to check on the situation.
Several minutes passed but no one from the control room gave us an update, so we pressed the intercom button again. The same faint voice answered, muttering something, then went silent again. Throughout our one-hour ordeal, no one told us how long it would take to get us out. There wasn't even an emergency hotline to call. We felt very helpless indeed.
The ventilation inside the lift was extremely poor and we found it very difficult to breathe. We were all perspiring profusely. Fortunately, no one panicked or fainted.
After a gruelling 60 minutes, the doors opened and we were gasping for fresh air, feeling relieved and spent. No one from Paragon's management was there to check on us.
Paragon added three floors during a recent asset enhancement project that involved two popular medical centres and the flagship Fitness First gym. However, these three floors are served by only two lifts, which are heavily utilised by patients on wheelchairs and gym members. One usually has to wait at least five to 10 minutes for the lifts, which are usually packed.
Apart from the inconvenience, I am also concerned about public safety in the event of fire on these floors. The only escape route is a very narrow stairwell that is steep and not well ventilated.
I would like to hear from Paragon on what it is doing to improve public safety and convenience. Would the relevant authorities also review the fire safety on these floors?

WE REFER to Mr He Shuqin's Forum Online letter on Tuesday, 'Trapped for an hour in Paragon lift'.
Paragon sincerely apologises to Mr He and the other passengers for the lapse in communication, and inconvenience and anxiety caused by the lift breakdown, and thanks them for their patience and understanding.
On May 22 at 11.52am, Paragon security officers were alerted that 12 people were trapped inside Lift B between Levels 7 and 8 when the emergency bell inside the lift was activated and the Fire Command Centre (FCC) was consequently alerted to the lift breakdown.
Lift contractor Kone was immediately informed of the malfunction. The maintenance team proceeded to the lift motor room to try to rectify the problem, but was unable to release the lift car despite repeated attempts. Kone's technicians subsequently managed to resolve the fault soon after arrival.
Our security and maintenance officers then stationed themselves at Levels 6 and 7 to receive the passengers. However, the lift car was brought to Basement 2 by Kone's service team, where all passengers were released safely.
The emergency button inside the lift car, when activated, alerts our FCC of a lift breakdown. Our security officer at the FCC will then communicate with the passengers through an intercom upon receiving the signal.
Unfortunately, on this occasion, the security officer on duty failed to give proper verbal assurance to the trapped passengers that rectification was being carried out.
We are currently conducting a thorough check on the lift system to prevent similar incidents. We are also reviewing our standard operating procedures to improve the response and communication between the FCC and the users in the lift cars.
Our fire escape routes are in compliance with Fire Safety and Shelter Department, Singapore Civil Defence Force and Building Construction Authority requirements.
