I LIVE at Block 241, Jurong East Street 24. On the ground floor is a day-care centre and preschool. And just nearby are recycling bins as well as a pit to burn paper.
Yet, on Wednesday, I saw two staff members of the preschool burning what looked like old textbooks, handbooks and reams of paper.
I suggested to them that it would be better to recycle. But one of them replied that the papers were confidential in nature.
I approached the school and suggested the same to a teacher who was there. She promised that she would inform her colleagues to 'keep it in mind the next time'.
These teachers are supposed to be educating the young. Is it not hypocritical for them to teach the children about recycling when they don't practise what they preach?

While I agree that there are many other better methods to discard old confidential paper materials, I always find it ironic that people expect teachers to be perfect people and never make mistakes (ever).
Teachers must all recycle, wash hands before they eat, be polite all the time, know everything shade of grey between black and white issues, have high moral and ethical ground, speak good English or Mandarin or whatever, good physique (else if you fat, how you teach kids nutrition!?) and be a walking, talking, instant response encyclopedia.
Add in the expectation of being constantly attentive in a class of 30 plus active kids - a teacher also need to be omniscient and omnipresent.
They could have used a paper shredder.
don't you know? everyone must be perfect except themselves.. they can make all the mistakes in the world and everyone must forgive them.. while they cannot forgive anyone else for any minor infractions
yeah I mean if they think teachers are like gods, why still need to burn or shred the paper?
Just send a bolt of lightning la from finger tip la!!!! *****PZZZZZZTTTTT***
if like gods then i'll make the insolent parents eat the textbooks and paper
that stupid toot who wrote the article must be an eco-Nazi~...
already say confidental, still want to kaypoh so much
Seriously, the teachers dont give a damn.
Its a new method btw. Burn them, mix them with water, drink it. Full marks for exam.
oh great, go hug a tree? kaypo.
Companies with certain certification or practises ISO and stress on environment protection and reusing and recycling of materials has proper management of paper waste and treatment of confidential documents. they have bins for confidential documents and they are to be shredded. They can still be recycled. can approach them because if they do it in public can casue fire. can be sued for arson. if such instituition do not have proper disposal of confidential documents must be headed by real cock up people.
I WOULD like to thank Ms Narrizan Khalil for her Forum Online letter yesterday, 'Burning at will by preschool staff'.
We understand and agree with her concerns and regret our action. Rest assured, following Ms Narrizan's feedback, we have reminded all our staff to use the office shredder available to dispose of confidential documents.
We also encourage our staff and students to recycle where possible and this practice has already been established at our school.
