Cockles shortage hits hawkers selling laksa and char kway teow

SINGAPORE: Some laksa and char kway teow lovers are a giving the
local fare a miss - because they did not come with cockles.
This is due to a cut in supply in Singapore over the past two weeks, as
one of the three approved suppliers is facing severe manpower shortage.
Supply from the company Kim Guan Food Industries was cut by half.
It tried to meet the needs of customer that require fresh cockles daily
but was unable to meet demand.
Hawkers have lost some customers who would rather not eat their
favourite dishes without cockles.
Sheng Siong supermarket, which usually orders one tonne of fresh cockles
and 600 kilograms of shelled cockles a day, is left with no supply on
some days.
Phillip Leow, area manager, purchasing at Sheng Siong, says: "The supply
of cockles meat is very constant but unfortunately for the past 10
days, we have met up with some shortage.
"Fortunately we have still managed to get some supplies but
unfortunately, it's still not up to our demand -maybe around 50 per cent
of our requirements."

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo!!!!
Fishermen dont make very much off cockles =) Their weight + size to selling price ratio is really really bad, say as compared to muscles etc. I think in an television interview I once watched, one was quoted as saying "We continue to bring in cockles as a service to the people who cannot do without them in their food",
On a brighter note, from a medical standpoint, not bringing in cockles is actually a good thing =) Cockles have a high risk of spreading Hepatits A, so all you cockles lovers out there, go get your hepatitis A vaccination done and eat raw seafood in peace!
Singapore mai hum.
Oh, that explains the lack of it in today's dinner serving of steamboat.
Don't tell me hawkers all putting hum into mee siam now.
Elections coming.

If you can get pizza hut to get you their calamari rings thru either delivery or takeaway from restaurant count, you win, its that simple. I won't make a bet like that if it could be done.
Grin yeah yeah i wont bother trying ;P I wouldnt step into a pizza hut anyway, when there's a Dominos right at my doorstep and Spizza next to the GF's workplace =)
But yes, back to the topic of cockles. Wouldnt want to hijack this thread =)
