Mustafa Centre ordered to close first floor until Saturday

SINGAPORE: Mustafa Centre in Little India will have to stop
business temporarily for 40 hours on its first floor following a court
order on Thursday.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) applied for the order as it was
concerned about overcrowding in the 24-hour shopping centre.
The first floor of the store will close from 4pm on Thursday and reopen
on Saturday at 8am.
Mustafa Centre had 45 safety violations in the past five years - the
highest for any building in Singapore.
It has also been hauled to court four times and fined S$43,000 for
flouting fire safety regulations.
The SCDF can halt operations in a building for up to 72 hours in cases
of extreme fire safety breaches.
Building managements can be fined up to S$10,000 for breaching fire
safety regulations.
If the violations are not dealt with, they can be fined an additional
S$500 for each day.

Too small a deterrant. Should go by by S$500 per sqm, then they will jump.

safety first.
how can dey do this??? Mustafa is a favorite place for our foreign talent friends.... Close already where can our FT frens go??? Go chinatown or wat ar???
Been to Mustaffa many times, still have difficulty finding the exit.
In case there is a fire, and there is smoke, and electricity cut off, a lot of people will not immediately know where the exit is. Smoke, darkness, panicking people plus the narrow passageway full of combustible goods will make swift evacuation difficult. Maybe the staff would also close the doors to prevent customers from leaving without paying first.
Its about time.
I think its a good move by the courts...to do something unprecendented....
not being done before doesnt mean it cannot be done.
Mustafa also attitude one....cited for safety violations...fined and hauled up to court 4 times liao still dun want to change...somemore I saw on TV last night that one mustafa staff mentioned something about "no mercy"....4 times in court still want mercy...
they think Little India is really india ar?.....
I have absolutely no objection to this.
Like it or not, Mustafa Center is one big hellhole. Extremely narrow aisles, shelves stacked high with combustible goods, poorly-demarcated exits, you name it. In fact, I think that the basement section with the huge stacks of clothes and fabrics is the worst of all.
And they can't argue that they didn't see it coming, not with the numerous citations for safety violations that they received in the past.
I laughed my head off when I read an article in another website criticizing this action.... if anything, URA and SCDF should have taken punitive action a long, long, time ago....
Really that bad ar ? i tot mostly indian and malay visit mustafa...
I wonder why they do not fine NTUC fairprice. Their outlets are pretty fucked up with stuff strewn about haphazardly blocking exits and pathways, narrow aisles etc.

maybe NTUC is exempt from fire safety standards because its NTUC.

ahahahahaa
but even if so, i think once in the public domain like STOMP, people will kpkb enough until the SCDF kena go tekan them

Think is not good enough. Must prove. All fire exits has a "break glass in case of emergency" button somewhere, so if you stomp them, make sure they don't have that thing, and that the fire exit is blocked.
talking abt NTUC.
I ever wrote to SCDF before over it's unloading of goods at the rear. Even till to this day, bo chap though some of the corridors are actually fire escape access.
