SINGAPORE: An exhibition on early Arabs in Singapore will open at
the National Library on Saturday.
Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo will officiate at the event -
'Rihlah - Arabs in Southeast Asia'.
The event also comprises a conference, business seminar and activities
that focus on the culture and contributions of the Arabs in Singapore.
The exhibition in English will feature current and historical
information about the social, economic and cultural links between
Hadhramaut in Yemen and Southeast Asia.
Hadhramaut is where most of the early Arabs in Singapore originated
from.
Also on show are artefacts, documents and photographs from local Arab
families, organisations and international partners.
The event is pertinent, as the Hadharamis were part of the making of
modern Singapore.
Their influence is reflected in the naming of well-known streets and
buildings in Singapore. - CNA/de
