Got once , an Australia tell me Coronation Road West's postcode .
I asked : " What's that ?"
He said : " Don't you have a GPS ?"
I replied : " Sir , just tell me where u want me to go , and i will take you there , easier . I can't afford one anyway ."
" Astrid Meadows Condo , u know where "
" That one i know , i have to know , it's my job to know . I dun need to invest on a GPS for places like Astrid Meadows , wasting my resources " ( Damn du lan liao , hot ! ) LOL
"Oh many drivers they dunno when i told them Astrid Meadows ."
"Not all lar Sir , if all drivers dunno where Astrid Meadows , they have to know Coronation Road West , if not they have to know Sixth Ave , if not Holland Road ."

Maybe boss should start a sticky likesay "Tricky destinations" given pax's penchant for short n sharp words like "I wanna go river valley, west coast, serangoon, bugis, etc..."
Entries such as the following could really help newbies:
West coast park as in nature park or road off west coast way?
Pandan valley as in the condo or the road?
Ardmore park same as above....
And some FTs like to go ECP! Goodness...give up!

If I take cab and TD always checking/looking at GPS, I'll be really worried for my safety!
I'll rather tell him which way to take and on reaching nearby, give him timely and detailed directions!
Using gps as an overview is fine but also must know how to use it safely. Some idiots use it as a junction by junction guide, then last minute swerve 3 lanes to the left and BANG!!!
GPS has got a few (5sec i believe) sec delay between transmission/reception.

My current Benz has got the GPS owned by my hirer , which is never on , my Wish has got nothing .
But i realized more pax in my Merc tell me their desired route , not very often pax tell me what to do in my Wish .
Perhaps pax might be thinking : " This guy with GPS , better tell him my route , or he'll bring you to holland ."
On my Wish , perhaps they were thinking : " This chap no need a GPS , only saw a Galaxy Tab , experience , no need tell , he know what to do ."

Got such pax like u could be ideal, who needs GPS. Some pax even insist I dun use them, they prefer to show me the way, fine with me.
Still rem the knn ang mo lady pax going to SIA Training Centre. Request her to show me the way? Knnbccb, She say if I dunno, I shouldn't have taken up the job, It's not fair to her. Insist I call company and ask them to show me the way. She say she doesn''t know. Later last min then give me instruction on how to go. If I have pax like her for every trip, my life shorten by 10 years.
Another case, got one rich kid staying in Camden park, say want to go Seletar camp, ask him but he say dunno the way, his own camp still dunno the way, not even the prefered route. Then if he dunno, TD dunno how? So far I encounter 2 rich kid like that, dun even know where they going.

i also drive 2yrs+ nia but i hav learnt very fast using the mehtod of
using street directory n pax to guide me. as TD no need paiseh 1

i rely on GPS once in a while esp if pax does not know the road name & just hantum one restaurant name or pub name to me , GPS really helps in this aspect.

i fully agree with experienced seasoned TD,they use their brains as GPS!but us newbies,sometimes got no choice,don't know the routes well and passenger also don't know or unwilling to help!they will say ur the taxi driver,u must know all the routes!these type of passengers are inconsiderate and never forgiving!even for newbies!

Street directory everyone has and it's a must have in the cab.
But, there is nothing wrong with having a GPS, especially the taxi newbies.
GPS gives instruction through your bluetooth headset. Once the route is set, you don't even have to look at it.
You can use it if you want. You can off it if you know the road.

Not saying GPS no good . . .
If one can rely less on it , i am saying , u'll learn more and faster .
Unless one can say : " I only use first time on GPS for such location , next time i know , no more using it ."
Then that's fine with using GPS .

From my using this GPS for 3 months, the feeling is like someone like Poolman transfering all his "Chi" or skill into me in one single breath. A GPS is as good a 10 years those old bird need to knock and burn on the road to get it.
I dun have to depend on my pax's mood to guide me.
Contra to what u say Poolman, the GPS shows me so many routes that I can take to a certain destination. This is something that I need a long time to learn as I am driving alone and dun have a senior next to me to teach me that. The next time, I know that route, so I dun need to use it anymore.
Taking calls, be it advance or current or even street job is a breeze. U be surprised lots of ppl knows their postal code, even Ang mohs. Just enter code and go.
Feedback from my pax:
A)They should make every taxi have this thing. Most taxi driver doesn't know where we stay and we got to tell them each and everything.
B) I been here at least 5 times and most taxi driver got problem in getting here.
C) from one ang moh in a jest: Hey, u cheating! like that everyone including me can be taxi driver. Just follow the instruction and go.
GPS not only show me how to get there, usually yr pax can help direct u there but what happen after they alight? u got lost in their area, especially those small roads in landed property. GPS leads me out anytime.
The "FUEL" icon is especially useful for me. It doesn't show me where to pump diesel. Wherever I am, if I need to go to "pee", I just activate that icon and it will bring me to my nearest "toilet".
I used my "DIESEL" icon to show me where is the nearest of our 17 diesel kiosk that I can pump, wherever I am.
I used the "CASH" icon to bring me to the nearest atm if my pax needs with withdrawn money.
Of course I know my brain should be the best GPS, but until then, I not trading my Garmin for anything else.
Anyway, at 55, how many years I have to live? Why taxed my brain so much? So what if I will use my GPS for the rest on my life? I rather spend the time to learn something else.
Know something? It's equvalent to like ppl still prefer to do mental calculation even tho they got a calculator in hand.
If now I am in my 30s, maybe still make some sense.

GPS I agree is useful tool. I swear by it to help me locate ulu ulu places. BUT NOT ROUTING because they will bring you go HOLLAND. Tanglin Halt to Redhill must go by CTE? Sounds familiar? Lol
How I use it simple. Just key in address and show the map. No need press GO. At least agar agar you see the place you will know how to go there. And when the vehicle is near the vicinity it will shows me where is my taxi with respect to the destination. Simple as that.

From Bukit Batok , he want to come to CCK Ave 4 .
OK GPS sent him using Bukit Batok West Ave 5 , which is correct .
But . . . at Bukit Batok Road junction , cross of Bukit Batok West Ave 5 .
GPS told him to turn right !!! Which is not wrong , but it's not right either !
Which the correct way is going straight onto Brickland Road !
Becos CCK Ave 4 via Brickland Road , it's the fastest and cheapest !
Imagine if i was the pax , nasty one , once u turn tight , i started hurling missiles at you for going long route , waste time bla bla bla , big round .
In the end , very unpleasant situation .
So after this situation , isn't asking the win win for everyone ? Ahead of GPS ?
