SINGAPORE - Former prime minister Mr Lee Kuan Yew said that while his views are "largely unvarnished" in his latest book on geopolitics, some of the rugged edges were shaved off.
"I didn't want to ruffle too many feathers," said Mr Lee at the launch of his book on geopolitics "One Man's View of the World" on Tuesday.
SPH chairman Lee Boon Yang said in a speech that the elder statesman was "remarkably candid" in his analysis of international politics, now that Mr Lee is freed from the limitations of being in the Cabinet,
He added: "Mr Lee is an unapologetic realist in his perspective of international relations, one that eschews emotion or ideology."
Present at the launch were Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Environment, Water Resources Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and former senior minister S. Jayakumar as well as ambassadors, academics and heads of business associations.
The 400-page book, published by Singapore Press Holdings' book publishing arm, contains Mr Lee's views on geopolitics and the future of world powers such as China and the United States, as well as the global economy and climate change.
His new book was written with the research and editorial assistance of a team of Straits Times journalists. They are managing editor Han Fook Kwang, deputy editor Zuraidah Ibrahim, Opinion editor Chua Mui Hoong and political reporter Elgin Toh.
Also in the team was a civil servant seconded to the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, Mr Shashi Jayakumar.
About 20,000 copies will be on sale at $39.90 (including GST) at leading bookstores from 5pm on Tuesday. It will also be available online at www.stpressbooks.com.sg.

(Reuters) - A copy of the first issue of Action Comics, in which Superman was unveiled to the world, has sold in an online auction for a record $2.16 million. It cost 10 cents when it was published in 1938.
The comic, featuring a picture of the "Man of Steel" lifting a car above his head as people around him flee, had been valued at just over $1 million by auction site ComicConnect.com.
U.S.-based ComicConnect described it as "the most important comic book in the history of comics," and said its unusually good condition added to its value.
The copy of Action Comics No. 1 was stolen from a collector in 2000 but resurfaced after an entrepreneur bought the contents of a storage unit near Los Angeles.
"What makes this copy so special ... is it's the highest graded copy known to exist -- it's a 9.0 on a scale of one to 10," said Vincent Zurzolo of ComicConnect.
Several reports in the United States said the owner of the comic at the time of the theft was Hollywood actor Nicolas Cage, although there was no confirmation of the identity of the buyer or seller.
ComicConnect held the previous record for a comic sold at auction, for a similar copy of slightly lower quality, which fetched $1.5 million in 2010. About 100 copies of Action Comics No.1 are believed to exist.

first of all, did you work hard to become a politician in your young days
of all, you compare yourselves with him
compare with me, you will feel very much better
“But we either believe in democracy or we not. If we do, then, we must say categorically, without qualification, that no restraint from the any democratic processes, other than by the ordinary law of the land, should be allowed… If you believe in democracy, you must believe in it unconditionally. If you believe that men should be free, then, they should have the right of free association, of free speech, of free publication. Then, no law should permit those democratic processes to be set at nought.”
- Lee Kuan Yew as an opposition leader, April 27, 1955
“If it is not totalitarian to arrest a man and detain him, when you cannot charge him with any offence against any written law – if that is not what we have always cried out against in Fascist states – then what is it?… If we are to survive as a free democracy, then we must be prepared, in principle, to concede to our enemies – even those who do not subscribe to our views – as much constitutional rights as you concede yourself.”
- Opposition leader Lee Kuan Yew, Legislative Assembly Debates, Sept 21, 1955
- Dialects are a burden on the young, forcing them to learn two languages when they go to school; Mandarin facilitates academic success. Lee Kuan Yew argued that “dialect will hinder the learning of the child if he uses dialect … to speak dialect with your child is to ruin his future” (ST, 17 November 1980).
- Dialects have no value, neither culturally nor economically; Mandarin is linked to a 5000-year old history, rich in culture and bears immense economic potential with the opening up of China’s market. Lee Kwan Yew stressed that unlike Mandarin which “has cultural value and will also have economic value twenty years later,” dialects “have no economic value in Singapore. Their cultural value is also very low” (ST, 17 October 1980).
- Dialects represent the past and are primitive; Mandarin is the future. Lee Kwan Yew in a television forum argued, “Mandarin is a developing language; on the other hand, dialect is a stagnant language” (ST, 10 January 1980).

"Politicians are the most dirtiest people in this world"
Ghandhi
Walau Ct there you go again with a chinese post. Me catchy no bally.
Anyway LKY's birthday is 16th Sept right?
That is actually Malaysia Day, the date Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak joined Malaya to form Malaysia.
Although it's recognised as Malaysia day, the people up north observe the original independence for Malaya on Aug 31st as the main day for the whole Malaysia.
Maybe if got kakis got plans I might go up KL for the weekend. Malaysia really celebrate independence day, maybe because it was a real independence from a colonial power. The best is Aug 30th at Dataran Merdeka. Everybody gathers there, I think still got fireworks, people horn their cars, everybody in party mood, really one of the best times to be in KL in the whole year.
