Trans-Cab set to take over Smart taxis
TRANS-CAB, the newcomer that became the second largest taxi operator here in less than 10 years, is set to acquire the fleet of rival Smart Taxis.
Smart will relinquish its operating licence in September after it failed to meet the Land Transport Authority's service standards and maintain a minimum fleet size of 800.
Smart, with 268 cabs last month, started in 2003 - the same year as Trans-Cab - when the Government liberalised the industry.
Trans-Cab chief executive Teo Kiang Ang told The Straits Times yesterday that the deal has yet to be finalised. He would not disclose the sum involved.
Smart's powder-green taxis will be resprayed to sport Trans-Cab's corporate red.
The deal, if concluded, should bring Trans-Cab's fleet to more than 4,700.
Smart Taxis managing director Johnny Harjantho was not available for comment.

No lah, buying is different from acquisition, the former can choose, and the later represent the taking over of the whole operation at a discount price.
So, that is why business term is important to understand, TC is buying over smart fix asset, meaning can be their taxi, their office or service centre. Human are fluid asset, liquitable in a sense, and the buyer can choose to opts out, beside, TDs are self employed, in the eyes of the employment laws, they are not covered.
TC job is taxi rental and provide support of what was/were rented. Taxi drivers rental out the taxis and drive, and because of the rental clauses that required the driver to follow TC regulations, Taxis driver must oblige to it

Tc current fleet is about 4700....
This 268 unit is about they're 3yrs 2% fleet increase quota....

Yes, they actually got more than that, but in certification only, every year, taxi companies will out bids each other for COEs beside the allocated one by govt, let say govt allocate 500 for cdg, 200 for TC, 150 for smrt and so on, after given out all these allocation, what left on the pool can be a 1000 COEs (open market) for taxis to out bid each other to take it, once taken, they do not need to buy a taxis until 6 months to a year time depending on the regulations, and by then if they do not get the taxis, these COE will become invalid.
Therefore Smart would had hold some COEs which is transferrable and consider an asset, and in accounting term or business going concern, it is part of the fleet. So, you might not believe that smart got so much cab, you can be right, they hold it on paper form only.
