TAXI firm Smart is facing an uncertain future due to doubts over whether its licence will be renewed.
The company does not have enough cabs to meet rules introduced last year.
It will have to stop operating by the end of September unless its application - which is "still under evaluation" - is granted by the Land Transport Authority (LTA).
If its licence is not renewed, the number of taxi companies in Singapore will be reduced to six.

Everytime you need a cab urgently, you cannot get one.
Taxi fleet size has reached saturation. No more increase in volume. Only way to increase profit is to increase margin = higher rentals. Good luck to all....
Gentlemen,
As I said earlier, the incremental of 250 to 300km per day is on the card, LTA will force the issue, the meeting translated into few issues that need to be address.
1. Core business, LTA much prefer a company who took taxi licence because of it core business in transportation and especially so in taxis. Not those do property business or contractor business to come into taxi business just for the sake of diverting their account.
2. The source for relief drivers is re surfacing, closure of a company may lead to more relief drivers, and also the current strictness apply in company also provide a platform for supply of relief drivers. For eg, if today I tio pok as hirer, I decided to become a relief, and so I drive on instead of waiting, so One relief on the road. understand
3. The 2 drivers one cab concept is very much on the agenda, meaning, if 250 or 300 cannot be met by a single driver, a concept of 2 hirers will take over, no relief, and these will lesser the need to built a pool of relief, these 2 hirer shall share whatever benefit, gain or whatosever, and the taxis will be at a neutral location to match both hirer living location.
more mileage on 1 cab by 2 TDs means more wear and tear, means more repair costs. may lead to more down time also.
they are simply creating more problems down the road.
comfort should set up satellite stations for a portion of their cabs.
no hirers for these cabs, and these cabs will be rented out on 12h basis.
more admin and costs on companies side. less hassle of finding the right relief/hirer

Taxis are a current asset of the companies, utilisation is a must, wear and tear can be cover by carmarkets during contract signing, perhaps from 2 to 3years, today most pte car are given 5 years warranty on parts unless self inflicted.
Even a taxis burnt on the street, with proper maintenance record, the insurance have to cover the cost depending on the age of the cab, taxi companies are not bothered by repairs, spares parts or burning, so to speak.
The utilisation rate must go up, by doing a 2 hirers to one cab, it reduce the cabby own usage, either for family or friends, it reduce the need for sourcing of relief and the headache of losing one and finding another.
According to Smart Taxi wetside...
They got 2k plus fleet of taxi...
If force to surrender, this 2k plus fleet of taxi will still circulate among the rest of the taxi company...
No influence for all parties except Smart's drivers...
A lot of their TD have very bad record with other taxi company before, so this portion of TD might have problem continue to drive taxi...

Taxi firm Smart will not have its operator licence renewed
when it expires on 30 September this year says the Land Transport
Authority
SINGAPORE: Taxi firm Smart will not have its operator licence renewed when it expires on 30 September this year.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) in announcing the decision cited several reasons, including the fact that the taxi operator had multiple failures in its taxi Quality of Service standards.
This includes failing to meet the call booking cater rate standard, accident rate, and first inspection passing rate.
LTA said its immediate priority is to minimise impact on commuters and to work with Smart to help it meet its obligations to its taxi drivers.
The taxi firm has assured LTA that it will fulfill its responsibility towards its taxis drivers. Smart added it will assist and secure placements for them with other taxi companies.
Smart's 268 taxis account for less than one per cent of the total taxi fleet of 27,781 in Singapore.
LTA said Smart was not able to achieve a minimum fleet size of 800 taxis.
LTA said it met Smart on July 10 to inform the company of its decision to not renew the licence.
Smart has assured LTA that it will fulfil its responsibility towards its taxis drivers and to assist and secure placement for them with other taxi companies.
LTA will work with Smart to provide necessary assistance to facilitate an orderly exit with minimum impact on commuters and drivers.
