MY LETTER about being bitten by bed bugs while on an SBS Transit bus was published last month ('Bugs on seat'; April 9). Two weeks later, I boarded the same bus (service 166, SBS 9278) and the bugs were still there.
I wrote to SBS using its online feedback facility and received this reply: 'Allow us to share with you that we have a systematic programme in place for the cleanliness and maintenance of our buses in order to provide our commuters with a comfortable journey. Following your feedback, the mentioned service has been called back to workshop for their necessary action. We are pleased to inform you that the said bus has been thoroughly checked, washed and fumigated to eradicate the insects.'
On May 9, I boarded the same bus and the bugs were still active, between seat No. 4 and No. 5 on the left row of facing seats near the back. There were some dead bugs, so the bus may have been fumigated. However, there were still live bugs crawling around.
That section of the seats was also still covered with black dirt. This, together with the presence of dead bugs, shows clearly that the bus had not been cleaned properly. The workshop had not done a thorough job and the management had not bothered to check.
My experience is not an isolated one. A friend who is a frequent bus rider recalled having been bitten many times. Does SBS really have a 'systematic programme' for cleanliness? Is it sincere about providing commuters with a comfortable journey?

Response from LTA -
WE REFER to Mr Simon Yong's letter on May 26 ('Poor bus network in Sembawang').
To address the overall development of the Sembawang estate, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) worked closely with SMRT to improve the bus network in Sembawang town. Besides buses, residents go to different parts of the island by transferring to the MRT system at Sembawang MRT station.
Since the bus interchange opened in November 2005, bus services were added or amended to meet the needs of residents. For example, in May 2009, service 882 was amended to ply Wellington Circle and Montreal Drive to better serve residents and schoolgoing children in the area.
In March last year, service 858, which connects Woodlands, Yishun and Changi Airport, was amended to ply through Sembawang Town, to provide a new direct service to take residents to the east of Singapore, and to be a direct inter-town service linking Woodlands, Sembawang and Yishun.
We rely on the expanding MRT network to be complemented with trunk bus services to link key destinations. Feeder buses and LRTs take commuters to transfer hubs, such as MRT stations and bus interchanges to continue their journeys.
This way, more buses can be deployed throughout the system to improve the overall frequencies of bus routes.
We thank Mr Yong for his comments as we take the input of commuters in our continual review of routes.

I LIVE in Sembawang along Canberra Link, which is part of Sembawang GRC. Over the years, I have given numerous feedback on our poor bus network during door-to-door visits by town council members.
Recently, I also wrote in to the Sembawang Town Council, and my feedback was forwarded to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SMRT.
LTA's reply was that Singapore uses a hub-and-spoke model, which provides direct connections to the nearby MRT stations and bus interchanges.
However, Canberra Link main road has only one bus service (167) and Sembawang Interchange has only five bus services. None of these is an express bus and none travels to the east and west of the island, where many people work.
All buses from Woodlands bypass Sembawang MRT and Canberra Link towards Yishun. Instead, they travel along Gambas Avenue, which is a long stretch of road without bus stops.
Bus stops have been upgraded and an interchange built, but bus services are nowhere comparable to neighbours Yishun and Woodlands.
Also, practically no bus services have been added over the past 10 years

SBST made a reply to this complaint on The Straits Times on 23 May 2011 (Monday).

The clear-case with SMRT (AMDEP) is they keep hogging to SEDEP like asif it's no end, If they can give up AM 171 (YI Start) 167 and 980 (both SE) for more space, Which explains why there's no space even to park for new services. Sometimes I see 171 buses parked at SEDEP hogging one of the parking slots which I feel could have another feeder service which could have eased 882's load.

Ya, they remove all the cushions and kill them with more powerful insecticides.
Every now and then I will encounter cockroaches in the buses.
Lots of small ones crawling around.
Eeeeee.

Sembawang Services I find it useless..even 167 & 980. Perhaps they should add 2-3 services to the city, 3-4 intra-town services and also 1-2 SBS Transit services there. That should increase the number of people at the interchange and also proivdes the Sembawang residents with needs.
From what I observes, people mainly take 882/981 and some times 859. Svc 859 does not help that much compared to the past as the residents will take 858 to Yishun instead of 859.

Saying wat's e point of announcing it to Southbound commuters?
End up ppl waited 20 mins for 950
Let see if MP Liang is farting or not.
COUPLES hoping to get their first homes through build-to-order (BTO) flats can look forward to an additional 4,000 units that will be coming up in Zhenghua in the next few years, said Mr Liang Eng Hwa, an MP for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.
With more flats in the Bukit Panjang area, residents can also expect new amenities and more public transport services, added Mr Liang, who oversees the Zhenghua ward.
Last Friday, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan wrote in his blog that he had told the Housing Board to build flats ahead of demand.
Agreeing with Mr Khaw, Mr Liang said young couples have told him that they would like to get their flats early.
He was speaking on the sidelines of a completion ceremony for Segar Meadows, a newly completed BTO project in Segar Road. It was the first post-general election completion ceremony for BTO flats.
The event saw Mr Liang and fellow Holland-Bukit Timah GRC MP Vivian Balakrishnan hand over keys to 20 families who bought units in Block 456, the final block to be completed.

x2....no point for 965 to try to compete with 161 by bypassing SBW to cut travel-time because it definitely has a shorter route and its frequency is far less crappy and it has DDs.
But then I doubt if the resources for 965 can even stretch into SBW.

TIB764L has it too when it was perming 307 and having the magnum poppy ad. I dunno if it is magnum ad. but i know it is the poppy ad, the same one as TIB993S or TIB990A.

Choa Chu Kang need not have an extra svc for the moment. But SMRT need to deploy more buses to 188 (Everyday) and 190 (Weekends). Svc 190 has a shortage of buses during weekends. Svc 188 has severly shortage of buses especially on weekdays. Coz waiting for 1 bus which i am able to board can stretch up to 1 hr, which i have waited before last year. It is even worst than 176 and 975, whose waiting time are already very long. Svc 188's average waiting time is 25 mins in Non-Peak Hrs. The waiting time reflected on the bus stop's board is totally untrue.
In conclusion, just deploy more buses for Service 188 (Everyday) and 190 (Weekends only).
Originally posted by carbikebus:Give new buses itchy hand go and vandalise,Stuff tissue paper on the aircon vents
I agree with this. It is usually found in Service 188 and 190.

Maybe 1 more service will do. Coz 858 is already passing thru Sembawang, Yishun from Woodlands before going to Changi Airport.

SMRT of course advertise SMRT Bus Service, not SBST Services.
